Overview
The advantage of deploying Powerline networking adapter is apparent, no need of running network cable from your router to the farthest corner of your room where you require Ethernet-based devices connecting to the internet. Or you don’t need to worry of getting low signal strength when you install a wireless adapter to connect wirelessly to your wireless network. With powerline networking adapter, you can build your home network by using your existing power outlets as the transmission media.
Using existing electrical wiring
For example in your two storey building, your router is located in the first floor and your home theater devices are located in your second floor. Running networking cables from the first floor to the second floor might be difficult and require hard work to complete the installation. The less work to do is by installing a Powerline adapter in the first floor and connect to the router (the network). Then your home’s power outlets are ready for the network. You can add Powerline adapters to each of your power outlet where you require connecting the devices to the network. But you can also install four-port adapters (such as D-Link DHP-540 and Netgear XAV5004) to let you connect up to four devices to the AV adapter.
Networking diagram
Have a look at the above networking diagram where the router is in the first floor with cable services, couples of desktop connect to the wireless router gateway (such as SBG6580 wireless cable modem router) using wired connection. The second floor where your home theater devices (including XBOX console, Blu-Ray player and large HDTV) are located connect to the multi-port Powerline adapter to get internet access via the electricity lines.
D-Link DHP-540 500Mbps Powerline Adapter
DHP-540 is a multi-port Powerline adapter which is ideal for multimedia devices that require connecting to the internet. Unlike the design of a single port adapter with a wall-plug, the design of this multi-port adapter is ordinary black box without any additional assessory to add a beautiful appearance.
Main features
- Includes four high bandwidth gigabit Ethernet ports with Auto MDI/MDIX to let you connect up to four high performance devices such as Home theater devices
- High speed up to 500Mbps data rate transfer for delivering high performance streaming and gaming

- Advanced 128-bit AES security encryption
Netgear XAV5004 Powerline Networking Adapter
This almost similar with the one from D-Link, the XAV5004 lets you connect up to four Ethernet-based devices, ideal for home theater devices. The model is the same as Dlink adapter above just a little extra sort of placemat at the bottom that add a little more solid appearance with jet black color
Main features
- Includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports for high speed connection
- It works universally with any types of Ethernet-based devices
- Setting up is easy, it’s a PnP device, no software is required
- Eco-friendly device with power on/off button
